The Building

Act One

A house with history

This corner of Barnard Street began as Gresham & Co. Dry-Goods, survived the fires that swept the square in the mid-1930s, and reopened in 1937 as the Palace movie theater. The Phipps and Layton families ran it for half a century, until the projector went dark in 1988.

Generations of Glen Rose bought their tickets here. Now the marquee is lit again, with a new vision and purpose. Come make new friends and lasting memories in this historic venue.

Act Two

Restored to the stone

The restoration took the building back to what it was made of. Original limestone walls, black steel, a stage on the main floor, and a mezzanine above it. The bar and dining tables are made from historic reclaimed hardwood. The seating defines comfort, with oversized chairs, sofas and barstools that say relax, and stay a while.

Our Story

Our love for meeting people and making friends, searching out new venues with great entertainment, enticing cocktails, and an atmosphere that made us feel welcome has been part of our life from the time we first met… in a bar in Washington, DC in 1988! The Palace Public House is bringing us full circle. We have created the exact space we envisioned every time we stepped out on our journeys. We hope you enjoy our vision and efforts in giving this special place new life.

House Characters

Ask about Glen & Rose

Glen Rose is dinosaur country, and we have two residents to prove it. Say hello when you visit. Rose likes cosmopolitans & margaritas, Glen, like a true Texan, likes beer, whiskey, and tequila…
